CrabCam

For our internet of things project I chose to team up with Carter Das and Sari Jack to develop and brand the cell phone connected device called the CrabCam. The CrabCam is a kit that connects to your existing crab pot. It contains an adjustable camera with a flash, a waterproof cable and buoy. The buoy controls the camera and sends photos and messages about your crab pot to your cell phone to the CrabCam App. Its device that makes a leisure activity that much more leisurely. Instead of pulling up an empty trap, with the CrabCam you will know exactly when crabs have taken the bait. So you can sit back and relax and watch the crabs your about to catch. Here are some  Preliminary Thoughts and Sketches #1 about how the CrabCam will work.

In this video you can get a feel for how the quality might be about 50 ft under the water.

Proof of Concept

Come on, we don't live in a fancy make believe world where our imaginations run wild and fantasy becomes reality.. or do we? Well I do. Anyway, as a proof of concept I put together other technologies that already exist. These pieces make the CrabCam, sort of like a Frankenstein of technologies. The two main Components of my CrabCam-Frankenstein are the camera and the "brain". The camera will be a lot like a GoPro but slimmer, with the body ripped out leaving only the camera, flash, and cable connection to the brain. The Brain will act a lot like the GoPro technology only it will also connect to the world wide web instead of just your local wifi. This will enable you and your friends/family to view how many crabs your catching on any given crabbing venture. Here the pdf presentation I presented in class to prove our Proof of Concept >> CrabCam P.O.C.

Also please note that until we have a web connection covering the entire earth, not all crabbing locations will be able to connect to the world wide web. The buoy has a secondary connection device within that connects more like a GoPro via WiFi. We chose the San Juan Islands as our testing grounds. In 2013, It was proposed in the San Juans that they expand there fiber optic network and add a total of about 30 cell phone towers making the islands the perfect area to test the CrabCam.
